Palms aren’t technically the hardest trees we deal with, they’re just messy and most people put them off because of the cleanup. Fronds everywhere, seed pods all over the driveway, and that constant drop onto the pool or the roof. We come in, clean the lot, and take it all away.
The big one up here is the cocos palm. It’s an environmental weed across subtropical NSW and Queensland, it self-seeds everywhere, and the fruit makes a mess. The good news for Gold Coast property owners is that cocos palm is on the council’s pest-species list (SO5), which means it can come out without a full council application, as long as an AQF Level 3 arborist identifies and documents it. Casey holds that qualification, so we can do the identification and the removal in the one visit, with the paperwork to back it up.
Whatever the palm, we always quote the stump grind alongside the removal. Leave the stump and a lot of palms will try to reshoot, and the base is a tripping hazard. Grind it out and you’ve got a clean patch ready for turf or a garden bed.

Straight answers
On the Gold Coast side, usually not. Cocos palm (Queen palm) is a listed pest species under the City Plan's self-assessable outcome SO5, along with umbrella tree, cadaghi, slash pine and coral tree. The catch is the exemption only applies once an AQF Level 3 arborist identifies and documents it. Casey holds AQF Level 3, so we can do the ID and the removal in one visit, no council application needed.
On the Tweed (NSW) side there's no equivalent pest-species exemption, so a cocos palm there may still need an application if it meets a protected category. We'll tell you which side you're on. More on the council page.
We quote it alongside every palm removal. Palms can regrow if the stump's left, and the base is a tripping hazard, so most people get it ground out. It's on the quote so you can decide.
Cocos palms are the ones we're called to most on the Tweed Coast, and they're worth dealing with properly. Grinding takes the stump below ground level so you can turf or plant straight over it, rather than leaving a hard pad in the middle of the lawn that catches mowers.
Palm removal for a 5 to 8 metre palm generally runs $350 to $650, with grinding from $200 to $350 per stump depending on diameter and how far the root plate spreads. If you're taking out a row of them, the per-palm price usually comes down. Either way it's itemised on the quote, so you can take the grinding or leave it.
Palm pruning runs about $150 to $175 per palm depending on height and how much frond and seed-pod load there is. If you've got a row of them we'll give you a price for the lot. We clean up and take the mess away.
Cocos palms are the ones we're called to most, and the seed pods are the reason. They drop constantly, they stain paths and pool surrounds, and the fruit spreads the palm into bushland where it's treated as a weed. Taking the pods off at the same time as the dead fronds is what actually stops the mess coming back.
Most people run a yearly cycle, sometimes twice a year where a palm overhangs a pool or a driveway. Once a palm is past about 5 metres it's a rope or EWP job rather than a ladder job. See the full cost breakdown.
