When a tree becomes a problem
Most people don’t think too much about a tree until it starts becoming a concern.
Maybe it’s dead or dropping branches. Maybe it’s leaning towards the house after a storm. Maybe it’s grown too close to the powerlines, fence or pool. Or maybe you’ve simply decided it’s time for it to go.
Whatever the reason, we’ll come out, have a proper look at the tree and work out the safest and most practical way to deal with it.
Sometimes a tree can be safely felled from the ground. Other times there’s a house, fence, pool, road or neighbouring property underneath it, so it needs to be climbed and dismantled in sections using ropes and rigging.
That’s where experience matters.

01 · When this becomes a problem

02 · How we do it
The right method for the tree and the site
- 1 We inspect it first. We look at the tree, access, surrounding structures and what's underneath it before putting a price on the job.
- 2 We choose the safest method. Where there's enough room, a tree may be safely felled from the ground. Where there isn't, we'll climb and dismantle it in controlled sections using ropes and rigging.
- 3 We use the right equipment. For difficult jobs, that can mean specialised climbing and rigging equipment, elevated work platforms or a crane. We use what the job actually requires rather than trying to make the wrong method work.
- 4 We clean up properly. Branches are chipped, timber is processed or removed as required, and the site is raked, blown and left tidy when we're finished.
03 · What's included

04 · Cost
What affects the price
Two trees that look the same can be very different jobs. The number moves with these factors.
- 01 Tree size and species. A tall hardwood is heavier and trickier than a tall softwood the same height.
- 02 Access for the truck and chipper, or whether everything has to be carried out by hand.
- 03 Proximity to the house, fence, pool or powerlines: the closer the target, the more controlled the takedown.
- 04 Method the tree demands: climb-and-rig, EWP, crane, or a straight manual fell.

Small, easy-access trees can start around $100; large or crane-access removals can run to $8,000 or more. Size and access drive the number.

How much does tree removal actually cost?
The honest answer is, it depends. Every tree is different. Most standard residential removals across Tweed Heads, Kingscliff, Cabarita and Bilambil Heights land somewhere between a few hundred dollars for a small one and several thousand for a big gum over the house. Once you're into crane work in a tight backyard, it can go higher again.
What pushes the price is size, access, what's underneath the tree, and how we have to get it down. If someone quotes you under a thousand bucks for a decent-sized removal, ask them about their insurance. We do free site visits and put a real number in writing, with photos. What's the difference between an arborist and a tree lopper?
It's not the chainsaw. It's the diagnosis. I'm AQF Level 3 qualified in arboriculture, which means tree biology, risk assessment, rigging and safe removal, not just knowing how to start a saw. Anyone can buy a ute and call themselves a tree lopper. There's no qualification for that.
The other thing that matters is insurance. We carry $20M in public liability. When you're dropping timber near houses and powerlines, that's what stands between you and a bill if something goes wrong.
Do you take the stump out too?
We leave the stump flush with the ground as standard. If you want it gone properly, ready to replant or lay turf, we grind it out. That's a separate line on the quote so you can see exactly what you're paying for.
Leaving it flush is fine if the area is going to sit as it is. The reasons people grind are practical: a stump left in the ground is a trip hazard, it can sucker and regrow depending on the species, and as it rots down it draws termites and eventually leaves a soft hollow in the lawn.
Grinding takes it 200 to 300mm below the surface along with the major surface roots, so you can turf or plant straight over the top. It runs $150 to $300 per stump depending on diameter and root spread. See stump grinding for the detail.
Do I need council approval to remove it?
Maybe. It depends on the tree and which side of the border you're on. Before any chainsaw work, we tell you straight whether your job likely needs approval, which council it falls under, and what they'll want to see. We don't lodge the application for you (that's the owner's job), but we write the scope to match what council expects so the process is as fast as it can be.
